Overview of Dawn of the New World
Born in the flourishing world of Tethe’alla, Richter had been the victim of oppression and hatred due to the fact that he was born a half-elf. He grew up bitter and angry, especially when he exhibited higher-than-average intelligence and was forced to go to the Imperial Research Academy. Normally this would be an honor, but because of his blood lineage, Richter was locked in the basement laboratory to do research that would never be connected with his name. Not long after arriving at the Academy, Richter met a young boy named Aster, a young prodigy researching legends of a summon spirit called Ratatosk, who was said to guard the Great Kharlan Tree that regulated the world’s mana 4,000 years before.
Not long after the two worlds of Slyvarant and Tethe'alla were joined once more, Richter left alongside Aster to find Ratatosk. Aster had theorized that the reason the new world was experiencing extreme climate shifts and natural disasters was because the mana was out of balance, and wanted to . They eventually arrived at the Ginnungagap - the door that separated their world and the demonic realm of Niflheim - which Ratatosk had been guarding since the Giant Kharlan Tree withered and died 4,000 years ago. They begged Ratatosk to use his Centurions to restore the mana balance in the world to stop the dangerous climate shifts. Ratatosk appeared to agree, but he had disenchanted by mankind due to a betrayal. Ratatosk ordered the Centurions to eradicate humanity and when Aster protested, Ratatosk killed him. Richter, blind with grief and rage, attacked Ratatosk and managed to injure him enough to force Ratatosk back into his core form. Aqua, who had become fond of Richter, told him that since Ratatosk could come back from his core form, he would have to destroy the core. To prevent this from happening, the Centurion of Darkness, Tenebrae, stole the core and fled from the Ginnungagap.
Richter set out to track the core down, intent on getting revenge for Aster. Eventually, he crossed paths with a man named Brute Lualdi and his daughter Marta, two Sylvaranti humans that were wandering the world after the death of Brute's wife. Richter helped Brute start the Sylvaranti Liberation Front - also known as the Vanguard - but directed the Vanguard into a paramilitary group. One day, he gave the core of the Centurion Solum to Brute, which twisted Brute into a violent, irrational man due to the chaotic energy it emitted. Richter convinced Brute that the only way to stop the Tethe'allans from oppressing the Sylvaranti was to revive the Sylvarant Dynasty, which had fallen 800 years before and of which Brute was a direct descendant. Not long after that, Richter managed to take Ratatosk's core. Marta had become disillusioned with what was happening to the Vanguard, and when she was approached by Tenebrae to help him steal the core from Richter, she agreed. Marta stole Ratatosk's core from Richter, and ran from the Vanguard. Richter was unable to track her down for six months.
Richter first ran into Emil Castagnier in the city of Luin while searching for Marta. Emil was being bullied by two boys, who were blaming Emil for all the disasters happening around the town, and trying to force Emil to swear loyalty to Lloyd Irving. Emil refused because he believed Lloyd had killed his parents and many other people in Palmacosta, so one of the boys shoved Emil to the ground, right at Richter's feet. Richter helped him up and ran the boys off. He was confused, for this boy looked exactly like his dead friend, but Emil didn’t seem to know him at all. Richter walked away after telling Emil he should stand up for himself. Richter headed to the mayor's house, and there Emil found him and tried to thank him for his help, but was too scared by Richter's tone to say anything. Richter asked Emil if he had seen Marta, but when he noticed Emil's nervousness at Richter's anger, Richter told him that someone who groveled in fear at someone's anger was no better than a dog. He asked if Emil was a dog or a man, and when Emil had no answer, told him to do his best to be a man and walked away.
Not long after, Emil came to find Richter, who was talking to the mayor of Luin. When Richter heard Emil say that he had seen Marta, Richter became agitated and began to shake Emil, asking where Marta was. Eventually he managed to calm himself down and asked Emil to take him to where he had seen her. Emil led Richter to a cave, located in the bed of the lake that had dried up around the town. Emil's uncle tried to stop him from going into the cave, but Richter demanded that Emil go with him into the cave, and went on ahead into the cave while Emil made his decision. After Emil had made up his mind and rejoined him, Richter taught Emil the basics of fighting while they searched for Marta so he wouldn’t have to watch Emil every second. They came upon a door deep within the cave, and Richter told Emil to stay behind while he went on through. There, he found Marta, and was about to finish her off when she screamed, drawing Emil through the door. When Emil got between them and tried to stop him, Richter told Emil that he was going to kill Marta because she was trying to revive Ratatosk, who he called a demon lord. While Richter was distracted, Marta took the chance to run away. Angered, Richter summoned Aqua to keep Emil occupied. While she did that, Richter ran off after Marta, but before he could find her, Lloyd Irving stabbed him in the back. After managing to defeat Aqua’s monster, Emil came across Richter as he collapsed. Worried, Emil went back to get Aqua, and led her to Richter. While Emil continued to search for Marta, Aqua took Richter and fled the cave.
Not long after, Richter ran into Emil in Palmacosta. He had mostly healed, thought he was still in pain. As Richter was about to leave, Alice - a high-ranking member of the Vanguard - appeared and tried to attack Emil. However, Richter stopped her and told her to leave Emil alone, claiming him as an acquaintance. Alice reluctantly agreed and left, but said she would attack if she saw Emil and Marta together without Richter around. Emil asked Richter what the Vanguard was trying to do, and Richter explained what their goal was. Richter didn’t stick around long, and as he left, Richter told Emil that he would do anything to retrieve Ratatosk's core, even if he had to kill Marta to do so. Before Emil and Marta could leave town, Richter came across them and attacked, intent on killing Marta. However, Emil blocked his attack, telling Richter that he wouldn't let anyone hurt Marta. Before anything else could happen, Zelos Wilder, the Chosen of Tethe’alla came out of nowhere and helped to drive Richter off. He left but not before warning Emil that Alice was plotting something.
On a journey of his own to collect the Centurions’ cores, Richter ran into Emil and Marta in the Temple of Ice near Flanoir. Marta was lured away from the rest of the group, who were blocked from being able to rescue her right away. By the time they managed to go around and find her again, Richter had cornered her and was about to kill Marta. Richter had Aqua distract them long enough for him to kill Marta and take Ratatosk's core. He left, but unbeknownst to Richter, the Marta he killed and the core he took were both fakes.
Richter didn’t run into them again until he headed to the Temple of Darkness, where Emil and his group had gone to retrieve the core of Tenebrae, who had sacrificed himself to save the city of Meltokio from being destroyed by a bomb. Aqua had felt a strange energy spike in the temple, and she and Richter had gone to investigate. Richter managed to beat them to Tenebrae’s altar, but they showed up before he could destroy the core. Richter attacked and managed to overpower the group. Emil used an extremely powerful, unknown Arte. Caught off guard, Richter barely managed to block the attack. Emil charged up the attack again, and this time Richter bounced the attack, causing it to hit Marta when she leapt in front of Emil. The part of the temple they were all in collapsed, separating all of them. Richter used that chance to escape.
Richter appeared again while Emil and Marta were rescuing Zelos Wilder's sister Seles from the Vanguard’s base. They had defeated Decus, another high-ranking Vanguard office who had been impersonating Lloyd Irving, and Richter snuck up from behind and distracted the group so Decus could escape. Richter defeated them once again, but this time, as Richter was about to kill Emil, he suddenly hesitated and called Emil “Aster”. Aqua appeared and called out Richter's name, shaking him from his daze. Richter pushed Emil away and left with Aqua, slightly shaken at being so vividly reminded of how much Emil looked like Aster.
Not long after, the Vanguard overran a building that was owned by a business called the Lezareno Company. Running into Lloyd, Richter within the building, he attacked Lloyd, fighting him until Emil and Marta showed up. Richter, having overpowered Lloyd, admitted to using power from the demonic realm of Niflheim to gain strength. When Emil jumped between Richter and Lloyd, Richter stated that no matter what Emil's form, he would kill him. Once again Richter attacked and defeated them. Emil charged up the same attack he had used against Richter in the Temple of Darkness. Richter rebounded it again, and called Emil "Ratatosk". The attack hit Emil, causing his memories of being Ratatosk to return. Overcome by the memories, Emil fell to his knees, and Richter tried to use that opportunity to kill him and avenge Aster. But Lloyd stopped him, able to push him back then as his power from the demonic realm had disappeared. Alice swooped down with her floating monsters and helped Richter escape.
As soon as they escaped, Richter, Alice, and Decus headed towards the Otherworldly Gate, which would take them to the Ginnungagap since it no longer functioned as a gateway between the joined worlds. As the group descended down into the Ginnungagap, Aqua appeared, refusing to let them reach the door. She told them that Richter was making pacts with the demons because they would bring Aster back to life if he succeeded in killing Ratatosk. She fused herself with a monster and attacked them, but was defeated and injured enough to return to her core form. They entered the room that contained the Ginnungagap, where Richter was standing in front of the door to the demonic realm.
Before they could fight however, Richter is pulled into Vatheon.
[ Personality ] :
Richter is emotionally closed off, never allowing people to see anything beyond what he wants them to see. His experience with being judged simply for being a half-elf has made it hard for him to trust anyone, so he doesn’t allow people to get close to him easily, preferring to keep everyone at arm’s length. Richter doesn't have anyone he can call a friend anymore and doesn’t seek out companionship or friendship, though sometimes people can manage to worm their way in beneath his guarded composure. This usually only happens with people who remind him of his late friend. Richter never bothers to sugar-coat the truth, as he believes that’s useless in the long run, so he tends to come across as stand-offish and slightly rude. But he won’t go out of his way to be rude to anyone who hasn’t annoyed him or bothered him in anyway. He feels no need to suffer fools for longer than absolutely necessary. In fact, he prefers to not have to interact with people at all, as his time spent along in the Sybak Academy basement has made it hard for him to understand and relate to people.
He is only outright hateful to those he would consider enemies - specifically those who would stand in the way of his goals - and is relatively polite to those he has no reason to be angry with. He prefers not having to kill anyone unless he absolutely has to, though he won’t hesitate to kill monsters or anything decidedly non-sentient. Richter dislikes those who allow other people to walk all over them. But at the same time, he absolutely hates to watch people be used by others, and will do what he can to help them find the courage to stand up to their attackers.
For most of his life, Richter’s life has not been his own. And because of that, Richter refuses to let anyone order him around and tell him what to do. He’s extremely strong-willed and independent and will only ask for help as a last resort. The first thing Richter ever did for himself was leave Sybak to seek revenge for Aster. Without this driving him, he’ll flounder for a bit since he won’t have a set purpose. Without something to do, Richter will try to find anything he can to distract himself.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Strengths:
Richter is strong and very agile. He is able to switch between using his sword – Mani - by itself and his axe – Sol - by itself, and using both Sol and Mani together to fight. When he needs to cause a lot of damage in a short time, he tends to throw his axe and then switch to using his sword by itself for.
Because he is a half-elf, he is able to cast magic spells, mainly elemental offensive spells and healing spells. A full list of the Artes and spells he knows can be found here.
Weaknesses:
Using magic requires time to chant incantations, so he’s completely vulnerable for the 10 or so seconds it takes him to cast it. It also drains his mana, making him tire quicker in battle.
He is mostly unused to long-range combat, making him an easy target for anyone with a gun or other long-range attacks.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
Richter has an item known as the Sacred Stone, which turns mana into flames. With this, Richter ends up looking something like this. It’s assumed this can only be used once because burning all of his mana would kill Richter.
[ Sample ] :
This was it. This was his last chance to get revenge for Aster. Richter’s hand tightened on the hilt of his sword as he stared up at the Ginnungagap.
To think, he would one day practically sell his soul for the annoying kid that had refused to stop bugging him no matter how rude Richter had been to him. Even worse, that he would be dead-set on killing another boy with the exact same face as his old friend.
Richter had never expected his life to turn out this way. He had resigned himself to a life alone even before he had been locked into the basement research laboratory, and then Aster had to go and insist on making Richter care about him.
He shook his head, trying to stop his thoughts from wandering too far back into the past. No use thinking about it now. Soon Aster would be resurrected and Richter’s life as he knew it would end. No one, not Emil, not Marta, not a one of their group would be able to stop him from seeing his plan carried out to fruition.
He squared his shoulders and stood tall, unwilling to face Ratatosk unless he was fortified for this battle. He hadn’t spent this much time battling him to show weakness at the final moment. Behind him, the door opened and the sound of footsteps echoed around the cavernous room.
It was time.
